Reflection on Academic speaking class
This week in the Academic Speaking class, my lecturer, Mr. Udi, invited one of the outstanding students on campus, namely Kak Alfian Fajrin. He held a sharing session with us about the strategies and tips for studying abroad, explaining the process and sharing his experience. Kak Alfian is a very inspirational figure who emphasized that no matter the obstacles, keep trying because effort is the first step to achieving a dream, and trying is better than not trying at all.
First, we were asked to write down fun facts about ourselves. Then, we were asked to write down what we liked about learning the English language and which country we wanted to visit. I wrote that I wanted to go to the city of Leeds, England, for several reasons. Then, he told us about the process of how he got to South Korea, mentioning a project with friends from different regions. Through the successful project, he was able to go to Korea to present the results. He also shared the challenges he faced, including failing the IELTS test, but he never gave up. He registered with YSEALI, an Asian youth forum that can facilitate studying abroad, and expressed his desire to qualify for the YSEALI program.
The important thing I learned during this session is how he went through the process of achieving his dream to study abroad and shared the results of his learning with other students. One thing I truly gained from it was his determination in pursuing his dreams. Despite facing financial problems, he continued to search for sponsors on his campus until finally receiving financial assistance. He conveyed what we, as students, should do today: prepare the necessary things needed to achieve our goals.
