EFL- English as a Lingua Franca

"English as a lingua franca" means that people from different countries use English to talk to each other because they don't speak the same native language. This is like how in the past, a special language was used for trading and talking between people who spoke different languages. Today, English is used all around the world for many things like business, school, talking between countries, travel, and movies. It is like a common tool for communication that helps people who speak different languages understand each other and share information.

The spread of English as an international lingual franca refers to how the English language has become a global means of communication between people who have different native languages. In John L. Brumfit's work from 1995, he discusses how English has spread worldwide and is used by many people, even if it's not their native language. He points out that English is no longer limited to specific countries like England or the United States; instead, people from all over the globe are interested in learning and using it. Brumfit also highlights that English is used everywhere and attracts learners from various regions who want to study and use it as a tool for international communication. English is now a global language accessible to people worldwide, and this change has not only influenced how people use and acquire English but has also transformed the way English language studies are conducted.

 English has become the international lingual franca for some reasons. First, it spread widely because of the historical reason, from the history of the British Empire, where it was spoken in many parts of the world. Second, as the world became more connected through globalization, there was a need for a common language in business, science, and culture, and English was chosen because it's so widely used. The United States, where English is the main language, also became a major economic power, and American businesses and culture went worldwide, making English even more popular. Additionally, English is the top language in science and technology, used by researchers worldwide to share their discoveries. 

English is also often used in international organizations like the United Nations, and it is considered easier to learn compared to some other languages. The internet, where English is common, makes it easy for people from different countries to communicate in English, and it is seen as a neutral language for diverse groups. People from different countries like India, Thailand, Korea, England, despite they still using their own country accent when speaking English, they still can understand each other when using English. All these factors have made English the world's lingua franca, allowing people from different language backgrounds to communicate worldwide.

This week in the Academic Speaking class, my lecturer, Mr. Udi, invited one of the outstanding students on campus, namely Kak Alfian Fajrin. He held a sharing session with us about the strategies and tips for studying abroad, explaining the process and sharing his experience.           In the 9th week of my academic speaking class, my lecturer, Mr. Udi, covered the topic of diplomatic communication. He explained that there are the times when we have to communicate problems and we can say it exactly as it is. We communicate directly and there is no impact on the relationship. However, there are other times, when the situation is sensitive, the stakes are high, we do not know the other people well, or the relationship is key to develop such as in a negotiation or with external customers.
