Learning experience in Academic Speaking course

First meeting of  Academic Speaking class


During the first week of our speaking class, we began by discussing what we would learn in the course, like the topics we would cover, the materials we would use, and the activities planned for the upcoming semester. As a student from the University of Mataram in a student exchange program, my introduction to the class helped me become part of the group.  I was happy to see that the lecturer and my classmates were friendly and welcoming.

The first class started with the teacher explaining the main ideas of the speaking course. We then had a lively discussion where students shared their own opinion about academic speaking. Everyone was eager to talk about their ideas on the subject. I listened carefully and read what my classmates thought about what they expected from the course, how they understood academic speaking, and what they thought the course was supposed to teach us, as explained by the lecturer. 

I also participate actively by trying to deliver what I expected from the course, I was mention that, by joining the academic speaking class, I hope I will be able to improve my English speaking skill, being able to discuss about many more interesting topics with others, and also having small groups to always practice my English. When the lecturer was asking about what is our opinion about the definition of academic speaking. I stated that academic speaking is the study of communication style in academic genres, this course  aims to improve speaking skill of the students, and make speaking performance become more better because speaking English is not only about the fluency but also the content that we are going to deliver.

The discussion was interesting, and it felt like we were having a good class vibes. However, for me, academic speaking is not just about speaking fluently and clearly. It also includes what we talk about because we are not only deal with speaking skill, but also about the content and making sure we say exactly what we mean in a way that the listener can easily understand and agree with it. The teacher stressed that having good speaking skills is important, especially for English student who will become English teachers candidate. He said that being able to show your English speaking ability is a way to prove you are good at it. Not being able to do that could lead to people thinking you have not learned much and probably judging you because you can not prove your skill in speaking English, even if you've spent a long time studying English. It is why joining the academic speaking class was seen as a necessary step in gaining these important skills.

This week in the Academic Speaking class, my lecturer, Mr. Udi, invited one of the outstanding students on campus, namely Kak Alfian Fajrin. He held a sharing session with us about the strategies and tips for studying abroad, explaining the process and sharing his experience. Kak Alfian is a very inspirational figure who emphasized that no matter the obstacles, keep trying because effort is the first step to achieving a dream, and trying is better than not trying at all.   First, we were asked to write down fun facts about ourselves. Reflection on Diplomatic Communication Tactics in English Material

          In the 9th week of my academic speaking class, my lecturer, Mr. Udi, covered the topic of diplomatic communication. He explained that there are the times when we have to communicate problems and we can say it exactly as it is. We communicate directly and there is no impact on the relationship. However, there are other times, when the situation is sensitive, the stakes are high, we do not know the other people well, or the relationship is key to develop such as in a negotiation or with external customers.
