AI and The Future of Humanity

Is AI the future of humanity today? Yufal Noah Harari, a speaker at a conference, explained the ecological crisis facing humanity, and in this case AI is part of the ecological crisis.

AI can help us in many ways to overcome the ecological crisis or even worsen it. This of course depends on how someone understands and utilizes AI.

In the 20th century, humans were generally afraid of the existence of AI, this was because AI had begun to operate like human capabilities. Even a computer can work to complete complex tasks such as mathematical calculations that initially could only be completed by humans. People panic about this because they are afraid that AI's abilities and intelligence will replace the abilities of humans, so they are afraid that they will lose their jobs because everyone uses AI intelligence. But we can see that currently AI is still in the early stages of development.

AI can be classified into two main categories:

1. Narrow AI (or Weak AI): This type of AI is designed for specific tasks or domains. It can excel in a particular area, like image recognition or natural language processing, but lacks general intelligence and cannot perform tasks outside its designated domain.

2. General AI (or Strong AI): General AI, which does not yet exist, refers to machines or systems with human-like intelligence. These systems would possess the ability to understand, learn, and adapt to a wide variety of tasks and domains, similar to the flexibility and intelligence of a human being.

AI intelligence has actually been used by science fiction film creators. They are motivated to make fictional films from AI intelligence. There are many scientific fiction films which depict AI as having extraordinary powers.

What I also caught in the video from the speaker at the conference was that AI is actually not something that humans should be afraid of, because basically humans are the ones who create and control the capabilities of artificial AI. Although there are several AI tools whose creators don't even know that the AI tools are capable of doing more than they expected. But as long as AI is still not able to operate in every house, in cities and mountains and if AI does not have the ability of consciousness, emotions and feelings like humans, then AI is not something to be afraid of and has the feeling that AI can replace the role of humans. .

AI for the future humanity should be interpreted as the use of AI for daily human needs. Currently, AI intelligence is like a robot that can clean the house, the owner only needs to say "please clean the wet floor" then the robot will move to clean the wet floor. Here this robot really makes things easier for humans. But of course this robot also has limited capabilities. Sometimes this kind of robot can only sense one type of sound, namely the owner's voice, so it cannot be used by just anyone.

Actually, the thing we are most afraid of is AI's ability to process language. Because language is what describes something that is important and meaningful. For example, the acceptance of money as a transaction tool was initially based on human agreement through language that money could be used as a transaction tool, and the language used in drafting legislation was also the main tool in the existence of laws. And AI's current capabilities are not only able to write, create images, solve coding problems, and calculate but also the ability to process language, convert text into sound, and can create fake voices. This is what humans should monitor. And it is very important for us to know that every new capability in AI must be generalized and considered for its usefulness by humans.
